Top buys of 2007 to take you into 2008
Approaching a new year doesn’t mean you need to re-think your whole wardrobe. Here we have listed some of the top buys from 2007 that you should keep for 2008.
The dress
Next
Dresses were a must-have item right from early spring this year. Fortunately, with femininity and glamour coming into its own for autumn and winter, the dress is a continuing trend. From shift to shirt-waist, empire line to jersey dress, there are styles to suit every body shape and style personality. The shift is a great versatile dress and looks best on rectangles or lean columns as it won’t emphasise their undefined waists. The Empire line is good for low-waisted figures to balance them out; neat, curvy figures suit softer fabrics and styles that follow their bodyline - in and out - while round figures benefit from the smock/tunic styles.

Tunic tops / dresses
Julien MacDonald
The tunic top/dress was an enormous hit this year and will still have a place on the high street, at least until Spring. Its versatility means it works for all shapes and sizes. Smaller, and younger, figures can wear them as a dress and for the grown-ups or larger figure, they look fabulous over jeans or smart trousers. Great for daytime or nights out, the variety of detail including patterns, embellishment, puffed sleeves or shiny fabrics offer a wide choice for all tastes. They will still be around on the high street (mostly the younger fashion stores) but they will be upstaged by more figure flattering dresses.

Leggings
Long Tall Sally
Not everyone could wear them, but many who shouldn’t did and the legging phenomena continues. They are a fun alternative to tights, they don’t ladder and they are immensely comfortable. For the more mature and rounder figures, leggings are best avoided as they only work on the right body shapes: petites and average to lean figures; average to long legs and, as a general rule, only for the under 30’s and strictly for a casual look!

Romantic bows and lace
Marks & Spencer
We saw a return to the 80’s romantics with pussy bows, frill detail and delicate lace on shirts and blouses and this look will continue into 2008. It gives a lovely feminine touch to an otherwise plain outfit and works well with slim trousers, wide leg trousers, city shorts, pencil skirts or jeans. They are ideal for triangle shapes which need more attention on top and also rectangles and lean columns who also need some detail around their shoulder or chest area to give the appearance of having a waist. Frills and bows should be avoided by larger figures and larger busts as it will add too much volume and small figures should opt for smaller scale detail.
Voluminous sleeves
French Connection
In line with the romantic look, the focus was on sleeves: voluminous puff, kimono and dainty and dandy bell. Again, the trick is to be careful with how much volume you can take, think like-for-like: if you are petite, you don’t want enormous sleeves that your arms can swim in. Equally, if you are large in scale then you can take more volume and more fabric, but make sure the widest point of the sleeve does not sit beside the widest part of your body.

Colour
Noli
Whilst neutrals and monochrome are still good staples, we have been seeing more and more colour. From spring 2007 we have seen bold, jewel-like colours in emerald greens, bright blues, strong reds and oranges and now lots of purple. Colour blocking is the bold way to wear your favourite shade, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Keep your colourful items as we will be in for a colourful 2008.

It’s not always easy to grasp the season’s styles as soon as they hit the shops. If you want a bit of guidance on what you should be wearing this winter, why not book a Seasonal Update with your local consultant.

Prints
Wallis
Along with colour, we saw more bold prints. Big prints can be fun to wear but they don’t suit every taste or every figure. We will still be seeing lots of pattern in the new season’s styles, so if it’s for you, just remember to go like-for-like; small figures should stick to smaller prints or choose just a top with pattern, whilst larger figures will carry large prints really well.

Metallics
Dorothy Perkins
Metallics have been venturing even further into daywear. Sporting a sparkly gold jumper during the day or wearing a jacket with a shimmer of silver is not considered overdressed and infact works really well to transfer to evening wear. As well as bags, belts and hair accessories, metallics can now be found in a range of clothing. Owning at least one pair of shoes in silver or gold, whether heels or flats, is most definitely de rigueur.
Oversized bags
Wallis
Big bags got even bigger in 2007 and will remain so for 2008. Women everywhere must be delighted; bags can never be too large to carry all our necessities! The danger with this trend is looking Lilliputian next to your giant bag. Keep it in line with your scale, there is large and there is enormous! Try it on as you would any accessory and see how it looks on you before you buy.
