April 2007 Newsletter
The spring/summer collections have now hit the shops, meaning we can officially start dreaming about long hot summer days and bright blue skies. Yes, it’s almost time to pack away those tights and woolly jumpers and bring out the summer lights and brights! Here are a few tips on some of the key trends for the forthcoming season…
Floral Fancies
This year it appears that the designers truly have taken inspiration from spring and bought floral into their collections. This is a dream come true for all of you romantics and creatives out there but for some of you, particularly you eurochics, the thought of wearing floral will have you biting the heads of daffodils. However before you consign florals to the compost heap there are ways you can add a little bit of flower power to your wardrobe…
Wearing floral doesn’t mean all over head-to-toe, just try it for a top or even just a necklace
Mix floral with another print such as stripes for a more creative look, just make sure you choose colours that match and compliment each other. But be warned - any more than two different prints just doesn’t work
A repeat pattern all over has the danger of looking like wallpaper so go for more abstract designs or floral trims for a more up-to-date look
Florals don’t just come in chiffons and silks, try them in cottons and linens too which gives a completely different effect
Floral jacquard is a subtle way of wearing florals
Keep accessories to a minimum if you do wear a lot of floral print or you will just look too cluttered
Top Tunics
The key trend that is continuing into the spring/summer is the tunic dress/top. They’re great because they are flattering on so many body types and come in so many variations you are bound to find one that suits you. Some key tips when looking for your top tunic:
Large bust - look for styles with a lower neckline and avoid big, all-over pattern, a plain design or pattern around the bottom is more flattering
Small bust - an empire line or gathered neckline will look great as well as patterns
Hourglass - styles that you can belt to show off your curves rather than hiding them
Triangle - colour is key, wear brighter colour and pattern in your tunic and combine with dark and plain bottoms, also try the great new style puff sleeves to balance your top half
Inverted triangle - Sleeveless styles with volume at the bottom rather than at the top, A-line works well
Rounded - stick to plain, simple designs without too much fuss and look for the softer fabrics
Maxi Dresses
For those who would rather skip the short tunic style dresses have no fear, there is another option: long dresses, otherwise known as the Maxi dress are also making a comeback. They are perfect for putting on without having to worry about leg shaving/waxing and fake tanning! Again, they are available in all manner of fabrics, colours and styles so you are sure to find the perfect one for you.
  A few tips:
Floor skimming dresses can be a challenge for petites so stick to one colour and small patterns unless you want to look dwarfed. Alternatively if you do want one with more colour and pattern wear with a pair of wedges for elevation.
The taller you are the more you can experiment with blocks of colour and pattern so try the block stripes and mixed patterns.
Wear simply with flip flops / sandals in the day or heels and accessories for an evening look.
Try belting to add variation or layering over vest tops or t-shirts on chillier days
If you don’t want to show your arms wear with a cotton cardigan or shrug.
