If you’re brave enough to hit the shops, what better way to work off some of those Christmas calories than to thrust yourself into the sales shopping frenzy with as much vigour as you can muster?
The January sales are the time of year when you can pick up some great bargains, but how can you be sure that what you’re about to buy really is the bargain you thought it was? Cardinal rule, be realistic.

• Something that you have been lusting after but is now only available in a size too small or too big
• An item that is severely damaged (even if you are convinced you can ‘fix’ it)
• The high fashion ‘key piece’ of the season, such as Russian inspired coats, that you’ll only have one occasion to wear before the spring kicks in and will make you look totally ‘last year’ next autumn
• A piece that is totally opposite to your style personality and which you will never wear outside the comfort zone of your bedroom
• A timeless, well cut, well made item that will last for years regardless of the fashion trends
• Some fabulous out-of-your-price-range-luscious- fabric item that you have been lusting after all season that is now vastly reduced
• An item that is your size and fits you properly Indeed it is far better to walk away from the sales with one great piece rather than bags full of clothes that you are never likely to wear.

If you want to be ahead of the fashion game and find some sale items that will still be fashionable in the spring,
keep your eye out for:
• neutrals such as whites, beiges and browns
• soft washed-out pastels
• khaki greens
• all shades of blue

1.
Always have in mind what you would really like or need to fill the gaps in your wardrobe - if you try and look at too many things you will only get confused and end up going round in circles.
2.
Look for items such as coats, suits and trousers in classic styles that will work just as well next year.
3.
Look for pieces that will carry you through the transition from Winter to Spring such as shirts and skirts.
4.
Try everything on - shops can be picky about returning sales items - and no matter how much it has been reduced, DO NOT buy it unless you are certain you will wear it.

The sales can be a good time to pick up items in luxury fabrics such as cashmere and suede. Even if you will only get a few wears before spring, get it in a classic style and it will look just as good next Autumn.

If you happen across a fabulous evening dress that is in one of your best colours and is perfect for your body shape, proportions and style personality yet you have no immediate occasions planned to wear it, buy it anyway. It will save huge amounts of time and money when that invitation does come.
7.
Visit the shops that you would not usually visit because you feel they are above your price range - they can often have some of the best reductions and because their clothes are likely to be better made, they will last that much longer.
8.
On that note, think relatively and consider spending the same as you would on full price item at your usual shop, on a sale price item from a high end store that is better quality and whose full price items are usually out of your price range. You will still spend the same but have better quality and add some variety to your wardrobe.

Sale shopping can be a nightmare but if you remember only to look for the clothes that are in your best colours and shades you will save yourself time and energy. Your colours are those that work best with your skin tone, eye and hair colour. If you were lucky enough to have received a
colour me beautiful
colour consultation for Christmas you would have received a wallet of colours to take away with you. These are small enough to be slipped into your handbag and are the perfect colour guide for any shopping spree.

Finally, remember it is better to come home empty handed and with money in your pocket than to buy something for the sake of it!
